My debt is paid
I grew up in a typical Christian family going to church every week just because I thought it was the right thing to do. I struggled trying to make sure I followed the commandments perfectly like a "good Christian". However, just like the elder brother in the story of the prodigal son I was so focused on the works that I had done (or didn't do) that I was missing God's number one commandment.
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength" was Jesus's answer when he was asked which commandment was the most important and it was the one on which I had stumbled the most. It wasn't until collegethat I decided to let go of trying to be the perfect follower and began to ask God's forgiveness for the areas in which I fell short. "All fall short of the glory of God" and once I realized that is when I became truly free from the chains that I had been unable to break.
I still face some of the same struggles even today but nothing is more freeing than knowing that because of His grace my debt is paid.
